The industry scored an overall grade of C (2.44).
July 2004 - The NAACP Economic Reciprocity Initiative (ERI) was launched in 1996 as a sustained consumer movement measuring corporate America's com-mitment to the African American citizenry and other people of color. ERI targeted companies are surveyed for their activity in employment, equity ownership and franchise opportunities, advertising and marketing, philan-thropy (charitable giving) and vendor relationships.

This is the sixth year of measuring the lodging industry. This report card focuses on the largest hotel chains in the industry, cross referenced with the hotels most often used by African American organizations and consumers for conventions and other gatherings. Twelve hotels were included in this review and the industry has scored an overall grade of C (2.44).

HOUSTON (AP) --Hotel chains have made progress in providing business opportunities to minorities, but have been slow to increase black property ownership and advertise in black-owned media, a new NAACP report found.
The hotel report cards, which cover 2001 and 2002, were issued at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's annual convention. They assigned grades to 11 national chains -- Marriott received the highest grade, B, on the 2002 report card; Starwood was the lowest with a C.

Survey Indicates Minimal Progress In Providing Equal Opportunity
Miami - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) today released its sixth Report on the Lodging Industry, issuing it an overall grade of "C", which means needs improvement. The report at the 94th Annual Convention in Miami grades the largest hotel chains, cross referenced with the hotels most often used by African American organizations and consumers for conventions and other gatherings. The survey is a measuring tool upon which consumers can rely to make informed choices about where to spend their dollars. African Americans spend over $5.5 billion annually in the collective travel, transportation and lodging industry as part of the travel industry.
